Originally by: Moghydin I know, it's quite a problematic title to come up with, as I'm not a developer and quite frankly not a big expert on game. But it's just my thoughts and they should be taken as they are.
The 1-st question should be: Is Eve worth joining now? The answer is û it depends. If you want a multi player Freelancer, then yes. If you want to be able to experience the true depth of the game, then the answer is NO. What we have now and will continue to have in the future is the vast majority of players still playing Freelancer while tiny minority enjoying all the options of the game. Quite frankly, the game was not worth joining even at the beginning of 2005. At this time many things took their current rigid form, especially the community, and for the newcomers, Eve will remain shooty-shooty space sim. The situation got even worse now for those unfortunate (like me) who joined Eve in mid 2005. On the one hand, we're out of competition with Eve veterans club. On the other hand, we might enjoy some advantage over those who joined after us. But those new fancy bloodlines destroyed it all. Very soon we'll be caught up by hordes of Achuras and such. So, basically, it's wasting more than 1 year of game time to rot at the bottom of pyramid.
By turning Eve into political/economical game CCP virtually built an impassable wall, forever dividing the members of ôthe elite clubö from the rest. The game seems to become more open-ended, but in reality, it became the game for the elite and vets alone. The introduction of the capital ships and outposts only highlighted the situation where the masters are forever placed above the humble plebs. The so called BPO lottery has virtually created Eve gods. Those BPO's either were directly won by the numerous alts and slave accounts of ôthe elite clubö, or were acquired by ISK. And ISK is never a problem for these guys as they have an unassailable control over the best resources in Eve.
To cut a long story short û Eve is not like other MMORPGs where you can be as good as you want to be. Here we have a closed cast of the elite players while others have not a slightest chance of even approaching.
I'm not going to bother reading all 3 (?) pages as I can imagine the responses but I have got to say I joined around the same time as you and I have enjoyed, and still do, every aspect of the game. Granted I can't fly cap ships yet and in all honesty it's not something I'm in a hurry to do. I do get to fly alongside them and fight them which is fun.
I routinely compete with veterans and very often I'll win. Your outlook on Eve is what is holding you back. You imagine you are doomed to fail so you fail. Nothing could be further from the truth, just go out there, do what you want to do and have fun.
Oh yeah, Freelancer multi-player was a hoot. I even named my Prowler "The Cardamine Carrot" in honour of my old Drom.

As a side note; if you cannot be bothered to read the entire thread, ask yourself; "Am I contributing something constructive to the thread by replying on the second or third page without reading the thread?" :)
Well I was responding to the OP based on the OPs post. I didn't feel the need to read through the same or similar off-topic tinfoil-hat rants and less than constructive posts that these threads always generate to say what I wanted to say. Simply that no content is completely off limit to new players, it's all down to how you approach the game. That and to give a nod to another ex-freelancer who may recognise the ship name and EveMail me to catch up on old times. Hey, it's happened.
I'd like to think somebody got something out of it but maybe not. You are probably right though. I should probably stop taking the time to try and offer advice to the same topics that come up week after week. In fact I should probably spend the time I do reading this drek in-game rather than offering my opinions / knowledge.
